Sound Chemicals Management for Sustainable Development
The Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board was established for the management of pesticides and toxic chemicals in Guyana. The Board is mandated by the Pesticide Act 2000, and its associated Regulation which governs the importation, sale, storage, use and distribution pesticides in the Guyana.
The Board is tasked with responsibility for the lifecycle management of pesticides and toxic chemicals including the licensing, registration, training, inspection and enforcement activities required. The PTCCB executes these activities with the aim of ensuring sound chemicals management in Guyana; reduction in human health and environmental risk, and food safety in agriculture production.
The PTCCB has a well-equipped laboratory that plays a vital role in food safety carrying out quality control for formulated pesticides and fertilizers. The laboratory also monitors pesticides residues in food.
The PTCCB is active in the training of farmers, extension agents, vendors, students, pest control operators, toxic chemical and pesticide users, transporters among others. This is complemented by a number of professional training and development courses. The Board also raises public awareness through the development and distribution of training materials.
